Chinese Ambassador to Ireland Zhao Xiyuan and Madame Li Yi Visit Irish Friends in County Offaly

On August 10, Ambassador Zhao Xiyuan and his wife Madame Li Yi, together with embassy staff, travelled to County Offaly to visit Brendan Parsons, the 7th Earl of Rosse, his son Patrick Parsons and their family.

The family’s ties with China date back to 1935, when Mr Hu Xiansu, a pioneer of Chinese botany, formed a close friendship with the 6th Earl of Rosse and sent seeds of Chinese plants, including dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) and camellias, to Ireland by post. For many years, the family has carefully cultivated a variety of Chinese plants in the gardens of Birr Castle. The dawn redwood seeds planted at the time have now grown into towering trees with lush foliage.

Ambassador Zhao and his delegation learned in detail about the operation of the science centre at the castle, the cultivation of Chinese plants, and the family’s exchanges and cooperation with Chinese individuals and institutions. Ambassador Zhao said that the family’s special bond with China was deeply moving. People-to-people exchanges between China and Ireland have a long history and have provided enduring impetus for the sustained and steady development of friendly relations between the two countries.
